Forum: the FUTURe of our dual language program

The SVE PTA hosted AISD district leaders on Wednesday, September 24th to discuss the proposed plan to relocate the wall-to-wall dual language program from our campus. We were well represented by teachers and English- and Spanish-speaking parents, and our voices were heard. While not a lot of new information was shared, we did learn that:

  • wall-to-wall dual language programs (like our current program) will become non-zoned
  • students already in the dual language program will still have access, just at a different school
  • the trustees' goal is long-term stability for the entire district in the face of state pressures

The district has shared slides on the consolidation process. Parent Tylor Morton took excellent notes if you want to read a summary of the discussion.

Foro: EL FUTURO DE NUESTRO PROGRAMA DE IDIOMA DUAL

  • los programas de lenguaje dual integrales (como nuestro programa actual) pasarán a ser no zonales;
  • los estudiantes que ya participan en el programa de lenguaje dual seguirán teniendo acceso, solo que en una escuela diferente;

District consolidation

AISD is starting to talk details on how school consolidation may happen. The changes being considered go across the entire district including:

  • location of wall-to-wall dual language programs like Sunset Valley’s
  • transfer policies
  • balancing enrollment in over-enrolled and under-enrolled schools
  • cost and condition of facility operations

Most relevant to SVE, the district is considering moving wall-to-wall dual language programs from their current locations to populations where the student body would be 50% emerging language learners (Sunset Valley is currently at 30%).

Things you can do

There are likely to be big changes announced in October for implementation next August. Let’s make sure the district knows why the dual-language program is worth preserving at SVE. Here’s how we can voice our concerns and questions:

  • Read the proposed consolidation plan when it's released on October 3rd.
  • Attend the PTA meeting at SVE on Tuesday, October 7th at 5:30pm to discuss our response.
  • Fill out the Austin ISD survey on school consolidation progress and the moving of the boundaries. The district is looking into feedback about the school communities, so in the section named "What do you love about your campus that we need to hear about?”, highlight the things that make Sunset Valley Elementary and its dual-language program special to you.
  • When on future district-wide Zoom meetings, represent our community with this SVE image as your background and as your photo when you turn off your camera.
  • The board is scheduled to vote on the plan on November 20.
  • School consolidations will go into effect beginning the 2026-27 school year.
